Surface Displacements: A Song Cycle - World Premiere

  • UMD Weber Music Hall 1151 University Drive Duluth, MN, 55812 United States (map)

Soprano Jennifer Lien and pianist Wendy Durrwachter will perform Durrwachter's latest song cycle of the eponymous poem of Duluthian Sheila Packa's latest book of poems Surface Displacements. There the preview performance will be in Grand Marais on October 21, 2023 and the Live Recorded (with Live Stream) World Premiere will be at Weber Hall at UMD on January 13, 2024. Both performances will begin at 7 pm.

Surface Displacements: For the preservation of wilderness and among those who search for home, these poems travel through mine pits and waterways vulnerable to environmental damage and climate change in Minnesota, where the Northern Continental Divide crosses the Laurentian Divide and creates three watersheds that flow into the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and Hudson Bay. This poem captures the beauty of the north and the resilience of people who are displaced, whose language is replaced, and who find a fluid space full of risk and possibility.
